Top RV Campgrounds for Every Budget
By Jenna "Road Life" Walker
When we first hit the road in our RV, we thought finding the perfect campground was as easy as pulling up and plugging in. Oh, how wrong we were! Over the years, we’ve learned that the right campground can make or break your trip, whether you’re looking for luxury, a budget-friendly stop, or a free spot under the stars. To save you some trial and error, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite RV campgrounds for every type of traveler—and every budget.
Luxury Campgrounds ($75+/night)
If you’re ready to splurge, these campgrounds feel more like 5-star resorts than RV parks.
1. Motorcoach Country Club – Indio, CA
This place is the crown jewel of RV camping. Think private docks, a golf course, and palm-lined roads with mountain views. I stayed here once (just once—budget traveler here!), and I still dream about those sunrise walks by the lake.
2. Boyd’s Key West Campground – Key West, FL
This one’s for the tropical dreamers. Picture waterfront sites, a heated pool, and the charm of Key West just a short bike ride away. It’s paradise—but in an RV. Just be prepared for the Key West vibe… flip-flops are required.
Mid-Range Campgrounds ($35–$75/night)
Great for travelers who want a balance of comfort and affordability.
3. Anchor Down RV Resort – Dandridge, TN
I’m a sucker for mountain views, and Anchor Down delivers. You get a lakeside setting with amenities like a pool (and a water slide!). It’s perfect for families or anyone craving a little Smoky Mountain magic.
4. South Padre Island KOA – South Padre Island, TX
Beach access and RV camping? Yes, please. This KOA is a gem, especially if you want to dip your toes in the ocean while enjoying full hookups. Plus, the seafood in the area is to die for.
Budget-Friendly Campgrounds ($10–$35/night)
No frills, but these spots are perfect for adventurers who care more about the views than the amenities.
5. Crater Lake RV Park – Prospect, OR
This spot is all about location, location, location. Nestled near Crater Lake National Park, you’ll wake up to crisp mountain air and views that are worth a million bucks—but cost you next to nothing.
6. Saddle Mountain RV Park – Tonopah, AZ
If you love the quiet beauty of the desert, this one’s for you. It’s affordable, peaceful, and gives you that “middle of nowhere” charm without actually being in the middle of nowhere.
Free Camping Options ($0)
For the ultimate budget-conscious traveler (or anyone who loves the thrill of boondocking).
7. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Sites – Western U.S.
BLM land is my go-to when I need a break from the hustle. There’s nothing like parking under the stars in Utah or Arizona, completely off-grid and completely free. Just make sure you pack extra water and supplies!
8. Walmart Parking Lots – Nationwide
Okay, it’s not glamorous, but Walmart lots have saved me more than once on cross-country trips. Bonus: You can grab snacks, a coffee, and a cozy parking spot all in one stop. Just check with the manager before settling in.
A Few Tips I’ve Learned Along the Way
- Know What You Need: If Wi-Fi, full hookups, or shade are must-haves, check before you book. Trust me, a campsite without shade in Texas heat is a rookie mistake.
- Book Early: The best spots fill up fast, especially during peak seasons. I learned this the hard way in Yellowstone!
- Read Reviews: Campendium and RV LIFE have saved me from more than one "not-so-scenic" campground.
- Be Flexible: Sometimes the best campsites are the ones you stumble upon by accident—like the time I found a riverside spot in Colorado that wasn’t even on the map.
Whether you’re looking for luxury, value, or adventure, there’s a campground out there for every budget and every style of traveler. So pack up your rig, hit the road, and don’t forget to share your favorite spots along the way!
